The idea behind the "Earth Witness Buddha"
Enlightenment On The Wall
Having a statue of Buddha is a great way of remembering the nature of reality, and how people spend time “grasping” at the illusion of reality.
The Earth Witness Buddha represents the moment of the Buddha's enlightenment. It is one of the most common iconic images of Buddhism. It depicts the Buddha sitting in meditation with his left hand, palm upright, in his lap, and his right hand touching the earth.
Just before the Siddhartha Gautama (the historical Buddha) realized enlightenment, it is said the demon king Mara attacked him with armies of monsters to frighten Siddhartha to get out of meditation under the Bodhi tree. But he did not move. While the demon king Mara claimed the throne of enlightenment for himself, his demon army claimed to be the witness for Mara's enlightenment. Mara challenged Siddhartha--who will speak for you?
Then Siddhartha reached out his right hand to touch the earth, and the earth itself roared, "I bear you witness!" Mara disappeared. And as the morning star rose in the sky, Siddhartha Gautama realized enlightenment and became a Buddha.
The Earth Witness Buddha also symbolizes the union of skillful means or Upaya which is symbolized by the right hand touching the earth, and wisdom or Prajna, which is symbolized by the left hand with its palm facing upward on the lap in the meditation position.
